Chegado às cercanias do bairro alguns anos antes, quando se tornou aprendiz do mestre Joãozinho 30, na Viradouro, Mauro recebeu um convite despretensioso, em 1994, para trabalhar em uma renascida escola de samba de São Gonçalo, que, ao primeiro olhar, era acanhada e pequena, mas que tinha sonhos – e investimentos – em grandes escalas. Seu nome: GRES Unidos do Porto da Pedra e sua missão era alcançar o Grupo Especial.
Com ideias revolucionárias e modos promissores de demonstrá-las, não se fez de rogado. “Era uma oportunidade de ouro. Eu era jovem, com muita criatividade, vontade de marcar meu nome no carnaval e com patronos que me deixavam criar e produzir do jeito que eu quisesse”.
Pronto, ingredientes perfeitos, mas e o tempero? Muita empatia e o carinho que se criou entre comunidade e carnavalesco, que a usava em suas criações e por quem se deixava contagiar.

Quintaes pode não ter feito nascer uma escola, mas muito a ajudou, sendo o real parteiro de que a agremiação precisava. Ele não criou o sentimento, mas se apaixonou por ele e o fez crescer através de seus traços, cores e construções.
Trazendo um olhar de quem pesquisou e escreveu sobre a escola e sobre o carnavalesco, digo sem medo de errar e sem querer criar falsa polêmica: Sem Mauro Quintaes, naquele momento, com aquela experiência e com somente aqueles desejos, a Porto da Pedra não existiria da maneira que existe e nem muito menos conseguiria fazer feliz seu povo em fins da década de 1990.
