Chegado às cercanias do bairro alguns anos antes, quando se tornou aprendiz do mestre Joãozinho 30, na Viradouro, Mauro recebeu um convite despretensioso, em 1994, para trabalhar em uma renascida escola de samba de São Gonçalo, que, ao primeiro olhar, era acanhada e pequena, mas que tinha sonhos – e investimentos – em grandes escalas. Seu nome: GRES Unidos do Porto da Pedra e sua missão era alcançar o Grupo Especial.
